Hi there! Welcome to my site.

I am Philip Docena. As far back as my early teens, I have always wondered how the brain acquires, organizes, and remembers experiences, and retrieves important parts of those experiences to make decisions. I have also wondered if --and how-- we can mimic some of those processes using computers.

Just like those random tinkerers out there who seem to be having a great time building stuff with nothing more than a garage, a dash of childlike curiosity, and some desire to create something, I, too, want to create something. So, I thought I’d study artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), then build some stuff. All inside my computer.

It is quite fortunate that the barrier-to-entry to doing some AI and ML experiments is a lot lower than actually building mechanical stuff. Although not quite as cool as making rocket jetpacks and mechanical marvels, AI and ML experiments are far less risky to life and limb.

I did not have a clear intent when I started this blog, nor an idea of a likely audience. Like many blogs, this was a shot in the dark. I could not make up my mind if I was intending it for people new to ML, or to those with some basic background. So I often sound preachy where I try to explain too much, yet skip useful detail altogether elsewhere. I noticed that I tend to not explain anymore the older I get. :)

This site will be a random log of some of my tinkering on ML and AI. Now and then I might also include random life musings, when I am bored or at wit's end figuring out AI stuff. This is a random walk after all.

So here we go....
